German Paper Stars
Join Nancy Tyrer, Craft Instructor from the Atheneum to learn how to make these traditional folded paper stars out of plain white paper. You can use them as decorations for any holiday. These handmade paper stars have been found in various forms through all cultures worldwide. They are often referred to as Moravian Stars, Christmas Stars, German Star, Froebel's Stars along with other many other names. Folded stars appear to have originated in northern Europe a long time ago where they were traditionally made with white paper. These crafty works of art are not really origami, but closer to a form of basketry. They are folded from four strips of paper, dipped in melted paraffin, and sprinkled with glitter to create a three dimensional,sixteen-pointed star. The stars were originally hung outside to decorate evergreen and shrubbery during the holiday season. The intent of dipping these stars in wax was a weatherproofing technique to keep the stars from rain and snow damage. We will just be folding them in this workshop.
