Steamship Authority Extends 2020 “Sail into Imagination” Art Contest Submission Deadline

All Local K-12 Students Invited to Submit Original Artwork Inspired by Steamship Authority Ferries

FALMOUTH (August 27, 2020) – The Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority (SSA) has extended the entry submission date to September 30, 2020 for its fifth annual “Sail into Imagination” art contest for students in grades K-12 residing in the SSA’s port communities of Falmouth, Hyannis, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, New Bedford and Fairhaven.

Additionally, all students in other local communities within the Cape and Islands are eligible to submit artwork that will be judged in special award categories to be featured in a Spotlight page in the 2021 calendar. Four prize winners from non-port communities will be selected in one of the following categories: Best Use of Color, Most Innovative, Most Expressive and Most Imaginative.

“In light of the COVID pandemic, we decided to extend the deadline and open up the art contest to students residing in all of our local communities so everyone could join this year’s contest. Not only will it give local students an outlet to create a unique work of art, our local parents and teachers can use this contest as a new activity to help keep their children engaged and active,” said Kimberlee McHugh, the Steamship Authority’s director of marketing.

The contest theme “Sail into Imagination” was conceived to encourage students to share their vision of traveling aboard SSA ferries and to inspire artistic interpretations of growing up by the sea.

In addition to having their art displayed in the calendar and on select SSA ferries, 13 winners will be awarded a $100 SSA gift card. All entrants, regardless of whether they are chosen for the calendar, will also be entered to
win a grand prize of a $150 VISA gift card.

Students are invited to submit entries online, through the mail or by dropping their submissions at Steamship Authority terminals no later than September 30, 2020. Entries submitted by U.S. Mail may be directed to the SSA’s Marketing Department at 509 Falmouth Road, Suite 1C, Mashpee, MA 02649. Winners will be
announced on the Steamship Authority’s website in October.
