This year’s month-long Nantucket Noel festivities—featuring the Chamber-sponsored Christmas Stroll Weekend (Nov. 30 – Dec. 2)—kicks off at dusk on November 23rd with the annual Tree Lighting & Community Caroling Ceremony sponsored by Stop & Shop.  Over 150 balsam trees lining cobblestoned Main Street and surrounding byways magically illuminate following a dramatic countdown led by our illustrious Town Crier.  A chorus of traditional carols ensues, led by Nantucket High School’s popular a cappella group, the Accidentals & Naturals.
Now in its 45th year, the island’s world-renowned signature event lovingly dubbed “Stroll” takes place the following weekend, featuring the eagerly anticipated arrival of Santa via his nautical “sleigh” at noon on Saturday, December 1st.  A host of holiday activities, including strolling carolers in Victorian garb, the Magical Talking Tree, craft shows, a European-style Christmas Marketplace and more insure fun for the entire family.
“Our downtown literally transforms into a storybook setting,” noted David Martin, President / CEO of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce.  “This quintessential, wildly popular event  transports adults and kids alike back to Christmases past, creating memories to last a lifetime,” he continued.  Sponsored by the Steamship Authority, this year’s event is themed “A Beautiful Stroll in the Neighborhood” to commemorate the 50th Anniversary debut of Mister Rogers Neighborhood on PBS.  It likewise pays homage to longtime summer resident Fred Rogers whose iconic “Crooked House in Madaket  is a historic island landmark, and whose legacy of gentle, caring acceptance of all people remains undimmed.

"The Steamship Authority is pleased to sponsor the Nantucket Christmas Stroll, which is the official kick-off to the joyous holiday season on Nantucket,” said Kimberlee McHugh, Steamship Authority’s director of marketing. “We look forward to transporting many visitors to and from Nantucket during the festivities. If you haven’t already done so, please book your ferry reservations online at www.SteamshipAuthority.com or call 508-477-8600. On behalf of all of us at the Steamship, we wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.”
To encourage shopping local for the holiday season and promote the sustainability of island commerce, the Chamber continues its popular Holiday Red Ticket Program, with participating Chamber member businesses giving out one red ticket for every $25 purchase.  The program commences on November 15th, with merchants dispensing two red tickets for every $25 spent on Double Red Ticket Days, December 8th and 15thAt noon on December 24th, five lucky winners of $1,000 and one extra-lucky winner of $5,000 will be chosen at random from the multitude of tickets filling the enormous bed of a Don Allen Ford truck parked outside the Pacific Bank at the head of Main Street.
The month of December draws to a close with the Nantucket Hotel and Resort’s presentation of a “Gala Nautical Dinner & Dance Party” on New Year’s Eve—its 7th annual holiday fete—showcasing critically acclaimed entertainer “Matty B” spinning a mix of upbeat party tunes.  Resort “chic” and / or nautical attire is encouraged, and attendees will enjoy an Opening Reception with hors d’oeuvres and complimentary wine, and partake of a deconstructed multi-course clambake and dessert to ring in 2019.
