    HOMESHARE NANTUCKET INITIATIVE TRANSFERRED TO
    NANTUCKET CHAMBER of COMMERCE

October 2019 Nantucket Island — David Martin, Nantucket Chamber president & CEO, announced that the Chamber has taken over operation of the Homeshare Nantucket initiative. Originally the brainchild of the Nantucket Civic League, the Chamber has placed the initiative under its organizational umbrella where its staff will maintain the website and provide requisite insurance and infrastructure to implement this much needed and ingenious service. The Homeshare website development and software were made possible through a grant awarded to the Civic League by Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Community Health Initiative.

The Civic League initially conceived the service as part of a solution to match homeowners with extra living space — whether a room, apartment, entire house, cottage or other legally livable area — with employers whose year-round employees need housing. Nantucket Civic League    Co-President Peter Morrison described the initiative as “a unique, free service that is available exclusively to benefit homeowners and employers; the goal is to provide stable, year-round housing to individuals who serve our community.”

David Martin believes this Chamber service will fulfill its mission. “By attracting property owners who would consider taking in boarders or renters as a way of supplementing or increasing income while offering Town services staff, trades people and other island employees reliable year-round housing,” Martin said.

Another benefit accruing to property owners could be the availability of vetted trades people who could work off part of their rent through services to a landlord. Clearly this could be a value-added benefit to renters, as well.

Operationally, employers are the primary point of contact for property owners and they alone will have access to property descriptions. Property owners’ contact information will not be available through the website. Homeshare Nantucket will facilitate connections between possible matches of employers and owners.
