About Us

More than 50 years ago, Willie House, a young black man from Kentucky started ''The Chicken Box'' as a spot for ''southern fried chicken.'' As the business grew in popularity, Willie introduced live band entertainment and The Chicken Box became a Nantucket hot spot for Jazz and Blues. Many great and near-great musicians made appearances at The Chicken Box. Muddy Waters was among the most famous. In 1977, The Chicken Box was purchased by Robert ''Cap'n Seaweed'' R. Reed. He introduced reggae to Nantucket. On May 10, 2000 the Cap'n sold the business to the present owners, all of whom are former employees and friends. The Chicken Box will continue to be unpretentious, friendly and relaxing, welcoming people from all walks of life for fun and entertainment.
