Join Elizabeth Congdon painting Nantucket's beautiful September light en plein. Elizabeth shares her process for capturing the fleeting golden light that casts long, cool shadows across the Polpis moors and marshes. Elizabeth will demonstrate how to create a powerful landscape painting by mapping in a strong composition and identifying the key colors and shapes. From the foundation, she will show students basic color mixing and brushstroke techniques that can be speedily employed to maintain spontaneity and curiosity as you develop your canvas in the ever changing light. Her simple strategy for exploring the natural world on site is designed for all levels. Moving from the general to the specific - the big picture to the details - you will build life observational skills and knowledge of atmospheric space. If the weather is inclement, class will be held in the studio focusing on the study of light and shadow, and the use of glazing transparent colors.
Some knowledge of painting (oil or acrylic) and drawing is required.
