Art on Shells with Zoe Markham

Give scrimshaw a contemporary twist by learning how to paint ocean creatures and other images in miniature inside a giant clam shell. Zoe shares her unique process and methods for painting on seashells from preparation to completion. You will create designs that echo the contour of each shell, sketch detailed shapes and add gentle layers of color to your shell until a luminous piece of art is achieved. A simple clear coat sealant is applied in class to protect the art and a thick coat of resin and gold leafing will be the final application. Shells will be provided with all materials, but students are encouraged to bring their own special shells to class.
