Artists like David Ligare use this vehicle to express something true and pure about our day to day lives. Students may bring in a favorite object(s) to paint from\, or set up a still life with studio props\, and paint them in a two sided shadow box lit with dramatic light. Instructor Elizabeth Congdon will show students how to analyse the various dynamics of light and shadow\, and how to capture luminosity with different pigments. Some knowledge of color mixing and perspective is helpful.\n\n \nMATERIALS\n\n\n\nCanvases:\n\n1 canvas between 16"x20" and 24"x24" in size\n\nPlease tone your canvases -at least one day prior to class- with a light wash of gamsol and a bit of Indian Yellow.\n\nPlease bring your own still life objects that have meaning to you. This could range from a favorite flower and vase\, to a pair of shoes\, to a collection of shells or stones\, etc. (size should not exceed 16" in any dimension.)\n\nPaints:\n\nWhite (Permelba mixing white is great)\n\nYellow Cadmium Light/Lemon\n\nYellow Cadmium Medium\n\nYellow Cadmium Deep or Orange\n\nAlizarin Crimson\n\nCobalt Blue\n\nUltramarine Blue\n\nOptional Pigments:\n\nopaque: Ochre\, Cerulean\, Cadmium Red\n\ntransparent: Indian Yellow\, Prussian Green\, Viridian\, Phthalo blue\n\nMedium of your choice (recommended: linseed/walnut/poppy oils\, and/or gamsol\, galkyd)\n\nNO turps\, mineral spirits\, or liquin.\n\nBrushes:\n\nSuggested:\n\nBristle: Round #2. Filbert (a couple each) #4 - #10\, Flats\n\nSynthetic Filberts and Angled Flats: (one of each) #4 - #10\n\nNOTE: Synthetic is great for glazing\, and angled flats are great for precision and geometric structures.
