Celebrating Black History Month Spotlights

In honor of Black History Month, we’re spotlighting #ACKChamber Black-Owned Businesses! We asked Jermaine Scarlett from Nantucket Island Creations a few questions, here are his answers!

Q: How long have you been in business/in the restaurant industry?

A: I have been in the restaurant industry for about 25 years and I’ve been running a catering business for 10 years.

Q: How would you describe your business or services?

A: We provide fresh, organic meals prepared on-site or delivered ready to eat.  Anything from delivery of prepared mason jars of salads, breakfasts, and heat and eat meals to a multi-course catered event.

Q: As a black person entering the industry, how were you received as you were starting your business vs your treatment now?

A: I have always been well respected and treated fairly on the island. I worked my way up in the restaurant business quickly and my reputation spoke for itself. My friends encouraged me to go out on my own. My wife has been a big support in outreach and marketing. Overall, it's been a very positive experience

Q: To what do you attribute your success?

A: Hard work and dedication and a good palate. Art school helped too, you eat with your eyes so presentation is really important to me.

Q: Who is the most influential black person throughout history in your life and why?

A: Personally and professionally, the most influential black person in my life is my brother Winston Brown. He got me started in the industry and connected me to the program that gave me the opportunity to come to the US.

Q: Why do you think it's important to support other black-owned businesses?

A: It is important to support black-owned businesses because there aren't many visible black business owners on Nantucket and we have a lot of black people here. It's important for people to see themselves in successful businesses and know they can build a better life for themselves, their kids, and generations to come. Supporting black businesses helps narrow generational wealth gaps and increases equity.

Q: Any tips or advice for young black people interested in starting their own business?

A: Believe in yourself, build a good team and take risks.

Q: What can we expect next from Nantucket Island Creations?

A: We are looking forward to increasing our "fridge fill" service and getting to a place to give back to the community. Maybe even working to address food insecurity on the island.
