Life’s a Beach – With more than 80 miles of pristine, free access beaches to explore, you’ll be eager to get started! For young children, the beaches facing the harbor-- Children’s, Jetties, and Dionis –have calmer surf, and provide lifeguards and facilities. For the more adventurous, the South Shore beaches of Surfside, Miacomet, Cisco and Madaket offer heavier surf. If you decide to take a surfing lesson, go kayaking, learn to sail or rent a boat for the day—it’s all right here!
Spin Your Wheels – There’s no better way to see the island than by bike, and Nantucket has over 32 miles of paths. Bike shops rent by the half or full day…or even longer to accommodate your stay. Nantucket’s twelve beautifully maintained bike paths range from .3 miles to 8 miles and cover a variety of terrain.
A Walk on the Wild Side – Nantucket is a haven for naturalists and acres of untamed conservation land are home to a bevy of rare flora and fauna. Take a four- wheel drive tour out to Great Point Lighthouse or join guided walks hosted by the Maria Mitchell Association, Linda Loring Nature Foundation and the Trustees of Reservations.
Try a Unique Sport – The Nantucket Disc Golf course located in the State Forest off of Old South Road provides fun for the entire family, and it’s free to play!
Let’s Have A Word –Nantucket’s historic public library, the Atheneum , is a pleasure to explore and holds a trove of information. A special children’s wing and the adjacent public garden host eclectic family programs throughout the year.
Take a Swing at It! Public tennis courses are available at Jetties Beach. Call 508-228-7245 for information. If golf is your sport of choice, Miacomet Golf Club is open to the public year-round, while Sankaty Head Golf Club is available to the public in the off-season.
Past is Present: Over a dozen museums and historic properties showcase Nantucket’s storied past. From the renowned Whaling Museum, state-of-the-art Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum, Maria Mitchell Observatory and Museum and so much more……you can fill your days with all sorts of discovery!
Tour de Nantucket – Tour Nantucket by bus, van, bike or on foot with one of the many tour companies or individual guides. Enjoy an intimate van tour with historic commentary and photo ops, a low-impact bike tour, an afternoon sail on the Endeavor or with Shearwater Excursions, or a walking tour highlighting the island’s rich history. (There’s even a ghost tour!) Don’t miss the opportunity to climb up to the Congregational Church steeple and get a true bird’s eye view of our magical island.

Take to the Ice – The state-of-the-art Nantucket Ice Community Rink offers a variety of year-round skating programs for all ages.
Unleash Your Creativity: The Artists Association of Nantucket, Nantucket School of Design and the Arts and Nantucket Community School encourage artistic endeavors with a variety of programs for all ages and in all types of media.
A Night On The Town: Downtown Nantucket’s two movie theaters – the Dreamland and the Starlight Theatre and Café –both feature first-run movies. After the flick, why not stop for ice cream at our vintage Main Street soda fountain? During the summer, Children’s Beach hosts weekly G-rated movies at dusk and Murray Camp offers a “Kid’s Night Out” program for ages 5-13.
The Play(ground)’s the Thing! Children’s Beach, Jetties Beach, Tom Nevers Field and Nantucket Elementary School all have playground areas, and a state-of-the-art skateboard park near the ice rink is a very popular venue in summer.
Strike Up The Band – Grab a blanket and a picnic basket and head down to the Community Bandstand at Children’s Beach on Sunday evenings at 6PM for a free concert!
Go Fish! Plan a family fishing expedition on a charter boat or with a surfcasting guide. Most provide equipment and training for both children and adults.
Catch a Madaket Sunset – One of the most memorable Nantucket experiences is yours for the asking. Set out a beach chair and enjoy the breathtaking sunset in Madaket while your children play on the beach. Afterward, grab some dinner or an ice cream at family- friendly Millie’s!
