"The biggest thing you can do is understand that every time you're going to the grocery story, you're voting with your dollars. Support your farmers' market. Support local food. Really learn to cook." --Alice Waters, Founder of Chez Panisse
As stewards of the earth, we must consider that our actions, however small, have discernible consequences. Island non--profit Sustainable Nantucket's mission is dedicated to "cultivating a healthy Nantucket by building a more locally-based and self-reliant food system and a strong local economy." Their efforts include expanding agricultural demand and production, increasing access to local food for the community through a vibrant seasonal farmers' market, in our restaurants and schools, as well as education the community about sustainability. To achieve their goals, they've spearheaded a variety of programs such as Nantucket Grown TM, Farm to Table, Farm to School and Community Agriculture. All promote the food grown, processed and distributed on island, and enjoin the community--from schoolchildren to restaurants to local artisans--to take part in reducing our carbon footprint in various eco-friendly ways. Click here to visit Sustainable Nantucket's website for further information about these and other programs, restaurants carrying the NantucketGrown TM brand, events, sponsorships and more. Do take a moment to think about the origin of your food, and do heed Alice Waters' clarion call to "Support local food!"
