Nantucket’s Unitarian Universalist church, the Second Congregational Society, gathers year-round on Sunday mornings at 10:45 for worship, music, and religious education at the historic Meeting House. Community concerts, adult education programs, and social events are scheduled throughout the year as well as many civic gatherings, community celebrations, and weddings. The Meeting House, sometimes called South Church by long-time Nantucketers, is located at 11 Orange Street. The congregation is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association, America’s most liberal religious denomination. The Unitarian Universalist faith has roots in the liberal Christian tradition and draws inspiration and insights from the world’s great religious traditions; literature, poetry, art, and music; political and cultural events of the day; the teachings of science and history; and the world of nature. The recently restored 1809 Meeting House is a Nantucket historic landmark and easily identified by the gold dome atop its steeple and the hourly toll of its bell. The historic Goodrich pipe organ, in continuous use since 1831, fills the sanctuary with its resonant sound. Childcare for infants and toddlers is provided at no charge on Sunday mornings from 10:30 - 11:45 on. The facility is wheelchair accessible.
Unitarian Universalist Church has been a member of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce since
2011.
